The design and customs associated with the Claddagh ring originates in the Irish fishing village of Claddagh, located just outside Galway city. The ring, as currently known, was first produced in the 17th century and is most widely credited to a young Irishman named Richard Joyce, a native of Claddagh.
According to legend, on a ship bound for the West Indies plantations, Joyce and his fellow shipmates were captured by Algerian pirates and brought to the African country. Joyce was sold to a Moorish goldsmith who trained the young man in the craft. After some time, the master was won over by the Irishman's charm and craftsmanship and offered Joyce half his wealth and the hand of his only daughter in marriage. However, Joyce declined as his heart belonged in Ireland. Upon returning to his native Claddagh, Joyce gave a ring to his sweetheart. They married and Joyce set up a goldsmith shop from where the first Irish Claddagh Rings, bearing his inscription RI (the initial letters of Richard), were produced.
