It was used to help newly converts embrace Christianity wholeheartedly and make the new religion more familiar to the pagans who previously used to worship the sun.   

Thus, the Celtic Cross first came into existence during the early Middle Ages and soon became a widespread symbol of faith across Irish lands. By the mid-19^th century, it had become a part of Celtic identity as well as a symbol of religion.

The Meaning & Symbolism of the Celtic Cross

The Celtic cross has a distinctive shape, encompassing a ring around the head. Structurally, the ring is supposed to give strength and support to the head and the arms of the cross. Some historians believe that it also represents a halo or the sun, depicting knowledge and wisdom.

The basic shape of the Celtic cross is said to mimic the shape of trees as these where held in a high regard by the Celts. The Christian missionaries wanted to tread lightly when they first arrived in Ireland and managed to merge imagery from sacred pagan beliefs and the Christian faith to produce a more holistic symbol.
