A Short History of the Irish Celtic Cross

Posted in Uncategorized on November 18, 2021.

The Celtic cross is a popular symbol in Ireland, representing faith and knowledge. Celtic crosses are seen all across the country in various sizes and forms, most prominently in architectural design, cemeteries, and ornaments.

What exactly is the Celtic cross? Let’s take a closer look at its history and symbolism.

The Origin of the Celtic Cross

While the exact origins of the Celtic cross aren’t known, it’s believed that it first emerged during the 5th century when the Christian missionaries arrived in the Celtic Island of Ireland. Saint Patrick himself is said to be the one who developed this design, combining the Christian cross with the pagan sun to depict the Christ’s supremacy over the latter. It was used to help newly converts embrace Christianity wholeheartedly and make the new religion more familiar to the pagans who previously used to worship the sun.

Thus, the Celtic Cross first came into existence during the early Middle Ages and soon became a widespread symbol of faith across Irish lands. By the mid-19th century, it had become a part of Celtic identity as well as a symbol of religion.

The Meaning & Symbolism of the Celtic Cross

The Celtic cross has a distinctive shape, encompassing a ring around the head. Structurally, the ring is supposed to give strength and support to the head and the arms of the cross. Some historians believe that it also represents a halo or the sun, depicting knowledge and wisdom.

The basic shape of the Celtic cross is said to mimic the shape of trees as these where held in a high regard by the Celts. The Christian missionaries wanted to tread lightly when they first arrived in Ireland and managed to merge imagery from sacred pagan beliefs and the Christian faith to produce a more holistic symbol.
